THE WHEEL
The Wheel is a choral piece for 8 female voices, created for the monumental hall, Børsen. Philip | Schneider's focal point of the composition is an interest in community. The eight female singers perform together, and present across age and vocal character the potential of the community. Precision, concentration and collaboration is crucial to the consensus and the nature of the work.
In the rectangular and historic space of Børsen, a formerly male-dominated arena, the singers position themselves in a circle and take the floor. With a trio of the glosses Me, You, Us the singers brass what with the bare ear can sound like an enigmatic blanket sound. Subsequently, a number of new single words are conveyed, which form a movement around the circle. The words Trust, A Look, Relation, Money, Courage, Justice, Hope and Love gradually spin with more speed and intensity. With Børsen as the scene and symbol of the pinnacle of capital, ‘The Wheel’ suddenly seems to accelerate above its own capacity and makes us think about what is really breaking our communities. 5.1 is recited over and over and refers to the percentage with which GDP fell when the financial crisis was at its peak. Philip | Schneider invites us to have confidence and courage in the same way as Lene Adler Petersen, who with her naked body, broke with protocol, to persecute her messages. The performance reaches out to the audience and into a sphere of intimacy when everyone has the opportunity to take part in the 'wheel'.
